Ubuntu Linux - Introduction

Ubuntu is a free operating system based on the Debian distribution of Linux. The name "Ubuntu" comes from the Zulu word meaning "humanity".

The goal of Ubuntu is to provide an easy-to-use, up-to-date, stable operating system for the average user, that can be easily installed. There are many distributions of Linux available, but Ubuntu is now the most popular distribution for the desktop. Ubuntu is free, and built upon open source software. This means that it is free to download and use. If you are a programmer, then you are also free to modify and improve the software. The most recent versions of Ubuntu come installed with OpenOffice (the Linux alternative to Microsoft's Office Suite) and the internet browser Firefox. There is also the BitTorrent client Transmission, and the GIMP graphics editor - all for free. The default desktop environment is called Gnome, and provides support for 46 different languages.

As you can readily see, this means that older computer systems can be removed from the cupboard, and given a new lease of life running Ubuntu. In many cases an older computer running Ubuntu will outperform a much faster system running Windows. Not only is Ubuntu inherently faster, there is no requirement to load expensive anti-virus software, which runs in the background, and consequently slows down the system.
